Performance Appraisal, Training and Development

Managers want to get the best from staff.

Performance appraisals, when done well, can keep employees motivated, avoid small issues becoming serious difficulties, and help manage conduct and capability matters.

The performance appraisal process is the ideal environment in which to establish required behaviours, review past objectives, set new goals and discuss future training and development needs.

To get the most from staff, ideally an informal performance appraisal meeting should be carried out on a regular basis (e.g. monthly supervision meeting) and a more formal performance appraisal meeting should be carried out on an annual basis.

Our documents in this section are aimed at helping an employer assess and manage activities associated with the performance management, training and development of staff, including:

  • measuring all staff on a equal basis
  • measuring staff on a regular and annual basis
  • assess past and on-going performance
  • identify, assess and update goals and objectives
  • highlight what skills are required within a role
  • identify individual training needs of an employee
  • provide a way to reclaiming training costs from employees
  • evaluating how successful training has been and return on your investment

Training and Development Activities

Training and development activities support staff in their role, and help them to achieve individual, team and company goals and objectives.

As training costs can quickly mount-up we suggest all employers make sure employees complete a "training reclaim form" before any costs are paid or training is undertaken.

Poor Performance

Informal disciplinary action should be used to improve poor performance and correct minor conduct problems. Employees should be invited to a meeting with their manager, with notes kept. The employee should be given a record of the improvements required.

Our documents to deal with poor performance issues can be found within our Disciplinary Documents section.
