Internet, Email and Data Protection

It is advisable to provide employees with details on how you as their employer will deal with company property and technology (e.g. emails, the internet and mobile phone usage).

It is also essential to ensure that employees, know how to deal with personal data retained by the company, understand their right to access personal data held on them within the company and also how to comply with the Data Protection Act (DPA 1996).

Our documents within this section are aimed at helping you as an employer manage activities associated with dealing with technology matters and employee personal data, including:

  • details on the use, issuance and return of company property, equipment and technology
  • the collation, use of, storage and circulation of employee personal data

Technology, Telephones and Property Use

All employers must ensure their employees are aware of the significant risks technology can present, in addition to the significant benefits it can bring.

Employers should also provide employees with clear guidance on what is acceptable behaviour and sensible use of technology, telephones, the internet and company property etc.

Data Protection

The Data Protection Act regulates the way in which personal data should be handled within a company. Employers also have an obligation to provide employees with access to information held on them. However, there are circumstances when data access can be denied and an employer doesn't need to show an employee everything held on them!
